A look into an old growth clear cut on Prince of Wales Island in the Tongass National forest in Southeastern Alaska. The land pictured is owned by SeAlaska, one of several Native Corporations that were returned ownership from the federal government of hundreds of thousands of Acres of traditional lands as part of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA). As part of the legislation around these corporations, they are required to return value to their shareholders, and in Southeast Alaska logging was the primary industry and resource available. As such, harvesting timber was seen as the most immediate way to fulfill these obligations. As of 2018 however, there became a new way to make money off these trees…leaving them in the ground. As a result of California’s Cap and Trade laws, corporations seeking offsets for Carbon emissions have paid SeAlaska to leave certain areas of land untouched, thus making it possible to earn revenue while leaving ecosystems intact.
